The Future is Global: What PCF’s Vietnam Initiative Means for the Pacific

As I walked the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City, surrounded by the vibrant energy of Vietnam’s entrepreneurial spirit, I was struck by a profound sense of possibility. This inaugural offshore initiative by Pacific Cooperation Foundation (PCF) was more than just an internship for our Pacific female entrepreneurship cohort; it was a bold step into uncharted territory, a testament to our commitment to creating meaningful connections beyond the shores of the Pacific.

A First of Its Kind

This program marked the first time PCF ventured into taking internships offshore, and what better place to start than Vietnam—a country that mirrors the resilience, innovation, and cultural richness of our Pacific nations. The women in this cohort, representing the diverse talents and aspirations of the Pacific, embarked on a journey that challenged them to think globally while staying rooted in their Pacific identity. Through hands-on experiences, they navigated Vietnamese business practices, learned from local entrepreneurs, and discovered the value of cross-cultural collaboration.

Lessons from the Journey

This experience underscored the immense potential of Pacific women entrepreneurs when given the tools and opportunities to thrive in international contexts. I witnessed firsthand their growth in confidence, adaptability, and cultural intelligence. They not only absorbed valuable lessons from Vietnam but also shared their own stories and perspectives, enriching the dialogue and fostering mutual understanding.

As we toured and engaged with Ton Duc University, we were inspired by its ambitious mission to become a top-performing international university, attracting students from around the globe. This vision resonated with our own aspirations at PCF, reflecting a shared commitment to empowering future leaders through education and opportunity.

Our journey continued with a vibrant food tour through the backstreets of Ho Chi Minh City, where we indulged in an array of snail delicacies and fresh seafood, immersing ourselves in the rich and diverse local culinary culture. The bustling, organised chaos of scooters weaving through the city's traffic was a spectacle, emblematic of Vietnam's dynamic energy and resilience—qualities that align closely with the entrepreneurial spirit we champion in the Pacific.

A visit to the serene yet vital Mekong Delta offered a glimpse into the lives of its inhabitants and their deep connections to this crucial waterway. The Mekong Delta serves as a lifeline for Vietnam and those whose livelihoods depend on it, much like the Pacific Ocean connects and sustains our communities. This parallel reminded us of the interconnectedness of our world and our shared responsibility to nurture and protect these vital resources.

We then met with FPT Corporation, a giant in Vietnam's burgeoning tech industry. Their presentation showcased how the nation is carving out its space on the global tech stage. Their innovative drive mirrors the aspirations of Pacific entrepreneurs striving to make their mark in competitive global industries.

These experiences culminated in profound conversations with remarkable female entrepreneurs who have forged unique paths in Vietnam. Their stories of innovation, resilience, and dedication echoed what PCF seeks to amplify—a vision where strong female leadership takes centre stage, breaking barriers and creating opportunities. The shared challenges, the triumphs, and the unwavering spirit to create meaningful change were themes that resonated deeply, underscoring the power of collaboration, inclusion, and shared vision.

Women Leading the Way

As a recent Forbes article highlighted, women and female leadership continue to rise despite tough political and economic headwinds. In 2024, breakthrough women in sports, business, and the arts demonstrated resilience and tenacity. Female entrepreneurs are building unicorns in male-dominated industries like whiskey, securing financing for their films, and changing the way important stories are told. They are even the force behind one of the best-selling shoes of the year.

More simply, female leaders show their determination in an increasingly challenging world. This aligns powerfully with the work we’re doing at PCF. Strong Indigenous women from the Pacific are taking the helm, navigating through challenges, and inspiring communities with their vision and determination. Their leadership proves that tough circumstances can forge even tougher leaders.

This program is more than an isolated success; it celebrates strong Pacific female leadership that commands the recognition and respect it deserves. In a world increasingly shaped by women's contributions, Indigenous women from the Pacific are taking the helm and showing the way forward. These women are more than participants—they are innovators, pioneers, and role models who demonstrate the power of resilience and the importance of leading with values deeply rooted in community and culture.

Moreover, the diversity and inclusion embodied in their entrepreneurial journeys reflect the unique strength of Pacific women. They seize opportunities to expand their horizons, fostering innovation and breaking barriers. Their actions exemplify how embracing diverse perspectives drives success and enriches the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem. By taking these bold steps, Pacific women are not only leading the way for our communities. Still, they are also shaping a new narrative of empowerment and opportunity for future generations. Their leadership sends a powerful message: it is not just a man’s world—it’s a woman’s world, too, and one where Indigenous women are thriving and inspiring others to follow.

Paving the Way Forward

This program is a blueprint for what’s possible. It demonstrates the power of strategic partnerships, like those facilitated by trade agreements, to create opportunities that transcend borders. It reminds us that our future—as Pacific nations and as a Foundation—is intrinsically linked to our ability to think and act globally.

Looking ahead, PCF aims to expand such initiatives, creating pathways for more Pacific entrepreneurs to gain international exposure. These programs are not just about skill-building; they’re about reshaping narratives, amplifying Pacific voices, and fostering a generation of leaders who can navigate the complexities of a globalised world while championing Pacific values and identities.

A Call to Action

As we reflect on this milestone, I invite you to join us in shaping the next chapter of PCF’s journey. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a potential partner, or simply someone who believes in the power of connection and collaboration, there’s a place for you in this vision. Support our programs, share our stories, and help us build a future where Pacific voices are heard and lead the way on the global stage.

The future is global, and with initiatives like this, the Pacific is ready to embrace it. Together, we can ensure that the waves of the Pacific carry our stories, our innovations, and our spirit to every corner of the world.
