Mary Maselina Harm

Mary Maselina Harm is a proud Samoan/Chinese-Fijian climate activist who is passionate about the power of storytelling in creating social change.

Working in multidisciplinary spaces, in particular with young people, she strives to co-design initiatives and projects that are of value to them and their communities. Mary serves the community in several different ways, but most notably as the Queensland Multicultural Youth Ambassador under the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network and the QLD Coordinator for the Pacific Climate Warriors. It has been this work, at the grassroots, that has informed how Mary meaningfully engages and mobilises community.

Through her work as a Pacific Liaison Officer in schools, Mary creates culturally safe and meaningful spaces with young people to create, serve and learn in a way that is meaningful to them and their communities.

I think it’s very important for us to bring that sense of community, bring that spirit of the Pacific, to the climate movement.

Having grown up away from Samoa, Mary stays connected to culture through her surroundings, keeping her traditions alive through dance and fishing with her family. Using Siva Samoa is a significant way for her to elevate the stories of her island and encourage youth to support in this climate fight.

"We're really about using traditional means of storytelling, song, dance, spoken word to share and elevate the stories of the Pacific," said Mary Maselina Harm from the climate action group 350 Australia.

I think it’s very important for us to bring that sense of community, bring that spirit of the Pacific, to the climate movement.
