COP27
Against a global backdrop, people from the Pacific Islands raises their voices to be heard once again, at COP27 - the UN Climate Change Conference - held this year in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
Often criticized as being an ineffective undertaking, this is the 27th year of the conference taking place. For the first time ever, the issue of Loss and Damage is on the official agenda. Of great importance to countries highly impacted by climate change, the subject has been blocked by the US and EU for years.
Delegations of Pacific people are attending to discuss issues that directly impact our people, being at the coal face of climate change impacts. Pacific Climate Warriors, a Pacific Youth Network fighting climate change, are championing the Kioa agreement drafted during a gathering of partner organisations and communities. Their agreement echoes the urging of Pacific leaders to pay attention to issues such as:
- The reduction of greenhouse gases
- Loss and Damage
- The safe movement of people from their homelands
- Access to finance
- Ocean policies that protect the eco-systems that Pacific Islands rely on
- Responsibility for inter-generational equity
