PCREEE to host potential PCF Summer Interns in Tonga

News 21 Sep 2018

New Zealand Scholarship students from Tonga who are vying for the Summer Internship programme will be able to intern at the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) based in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.

The securement of placements at PCREEE was discussed during the Trade Mission in Tonga, led by the New Zealand Tongan Business Council.

It reflects an increased interest of organisations in the Pacific region to host PCF Summer Interns.

In 2016 former PCF summer intern Sevefaiga Manu was placed with the NZ High Commission in Samoa, developing her professional skills.

Programme Development Manager Linda Kaua says that having regional host agencies will help Pacific NZ Scholar students feel at ease when they return home.

“Having host agencies from the region participating in the Summer Internship Programme will be beneficial to the interns, as it would provide them with the opportunity to apply what they have learnt in a real-life situation,” she says.

“Moreover, it could further develop their skills and competencies for future employment after graduating from university.”

The PCREEE was established in 2017 and is hosted by the Pacific Community (SPC) in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.

The Centre is part of a Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres and assists Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) to address existing barriers and strengthen drivers for sustainable energy markets, industries and innovation.

PCREEE Manager Solomone Fifita is pleased PCF approached the centre and looks forward to meeting their future intern.

“This is something new and exciting for us here at PCREEE, as this internship programme fits in with our capability building and youth entrepreneurship activities,” he says.

PCF is hoping to secure more placements with other public/private sector organisations in New Zealand and/or in the Pacific region.
