The Australia Fiji Business Council (AFBC) has announced Geoffrey Shaw will be its President at the 31st Annual General Meeting in Sydney recently.
Having spent over 40 years actively involved with Fiji tourism, Geoffrey brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the work of the AFBC.
Prior to his election as President, Geoffrey had been Vice-President of the AFBC for the last eight years, and he has served on the executive committee since 1997.
After being elected as President at the AGM, Geoffrey presented the opening remarks at the 23rd Australia Fiji Business Forum, also held on October 13, in Sydney.
Taking this role is an honour for the new President as he believes a strong Council plays a very important role in the historic and strong bilateral business relationship between Fiji and Australia.
“To be entrusted with this leadership position of the Council provides me with another avenue of continuing the work I have been promoting virtually all my adult life - that is, working to bring employment and economic growth to Fiji and growing the business and investment relationship between Australia and Fiji,” he says.
Geoffrey’s experience in Fiji has extended to his ownership in overseeing and developing various projects and initiatives.
These include the purchase and re-development of Castaway Island, Fiji and the concept and development of the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort.
Over the years, Geoffrey has actively engaged with relevant government departments and ministries in Fiji.
He has negotiated and secured construction finance through the World Bank, European Investment Bank, Export and Finance Insurance Corporation and the provision of takeout finance through then Fiji National Provident Fund and local commercial banks.
The new AFBC President holds a number of key positions that keep him involved in Fiji including: President - AFBC (Sponsor Member); Director - Airports Fiji Limited; Deputy Chairman - Tourism Fiji; Chairman - Westpac Fiji Local Advisory Board; Director - Marsh Fiji Advisory Board and Chairman - Mamanuca Environment Society.
Formed in 1986, the AFBC is in its fourth decade promoting growth in the Australia-Fiji business relationship and economic growth in Fiji.
Geoffrey has expressed his appreciation on behalf of Council members for the work of outgoing President Greg Pawson of Westpac Pacific Banking.
