FAQs for employers interested in participating in the Summer Internship Programme.
What is the Pacific Cooperation Foundation Summer Internship Programme?
The programme offers Pacific Manaaki Scholars studying in New Zealand an opportunity to gain practical work experience by interning with organizations across various industries. The goal is to provide these scholars with meaningful, hands-on experience that complements their academic studies.
Who are the interns?
Our interns are recipients of the prestigious Pacific Manaaki Scholarships. They are highly motivated students from Pacific Island nations currently studying at tertiary institutions in New Zealand. They bring with them a wealth of knowledge, cultural insights, and a strong desire to contribute positively to your organisation.
What types of organisations can host an intern?
We welcome a diverse range of organisations, including businesses, non-profits, government agencies, and academic institutions. Any organisation that can provide a valuable learning experience and a supportive environment is encouraged to participate.
What kind of work can interns do?
Interns can contribute to a wide variety of tasks, from research and analysis to project management, creative work, and community outreach. The work should be relevant to their field of study and provide them with opportunities to develop new skills and insights.
How long is the internship?
The internship typically lasts for 6-8 Weeks, during the summer break. However, the exact duration can be flexible depending on the needs of the organisation and the availability of the intern.
Is the internship paid or unpaid?
Internships for Manaaki Scholars are typically unpaid. However, if the nature of the internship requires the intern to be onsite, the host organisation is expected to provide accommodation and hosting. While compensation is not required or expected, these details can be discussed to ensure a mutually beneficial arrangement. We’re happy to work with you to explore options that meet both your needs and those of the intern.
What support does Pacific Cooperation Foundation provide to employers?
We offer ongoing support throughout the internship period, including guidance on best practices, assistance with onboarding, and regular check-ins to ensure both the intern and host organisation are having a positive experience.
What are the expectations for mentoring and supervision?
We ask that host organisations provide interns with a mentor or supervisor who can offer guidance, feedback, and support throughout the internship. This individual should be available to help the intern navigate their role and ensure they are gaining valuable experience.
